Perhaps you hired a new employee – like I did – that accidentally deleted one of your most important database files.
If you don’t have redundancy in place, there’s a good chance that you just erased:
- Customer data
- Sales information
- Crucial project files
The truth is that I should have had a backup of my entire system on a system that was updated to the cloud, or kept on a tape drive. But this becomes an issue if it does not happen in real time. Oftentimes, you’ll delete a file that you need that day – like I did.
My story is fairly simple.
I have a great new employee, who we’ll call Dan, and he was just getting used to our proprietary system. When working on our system, Dan was actually working on one of our client’s biggest projects that was due within a week. The majority of the work had already been completed, and this consisted of hundreds of hours of work.
Being new, Dan was allowed to use a system that didn’t have the right permissions, which enabled him to delete the folder on accident.
After being deleted, I scoured my backups and found that I lost two days’ worth of work. With several people working on the project, this means that I lost hundreds to thousands of dollars in the process.
It’s safe to say that I should have had a backup system in place.
1. Professional Recovery
Professional recovery typically occurs when you’ve formatted the drive, or the drivers crashed. Drives that crash are not able to be booted, which leaves you with no access to the actual data on the drive.
As a result, a professional service will typically try to copy different sectors of the drive over to a new drive.
Different approaches can be taken when trying to professionally recover data, but there is never 100% certainty that a crashed drive will be able to be restored. The same can occur with files that have been deleted. But many professional services will use software to restore files that have been:
- Accidentally formatted
2. Hard Drive Recovery Software
I chose to go with data recovery software. You can perform an external hard drive recovery if the drive has been formatted or crashed, but I needed a tool for recovering deleted files. And tools for recovering deleted files are far less expensive than hiring a professional to perform s recovery of your drive.
This software will:
- Search your hard drive for deleted file fragments
- Combine these fragments to restore your file
- List an abundance of files that can be restored
For me, this option made the most sense. There is a good chance that sometime in the future someone will accidentally delete a file. And it doesn’t make sense to have to ship my hard drive to another professional to have it restored.
First and foremost, this raises privacy and security concerns – and that costs a lot of money.
Data Rescue PC3 Software was the best solution I found. There’s also a free version which will allow you to rescue some of your files, and there are several other subscription services that are available.
Data Recovery with Data Rescue PC3 Software
I’m going to be honest: I know my way around the computer, but I’m nowhere near a professional. I can create databases, modify them, install new operating systems, but I’ve never had to recover files before.
I chose Data Rescue PC because it offers four different subscription options:
- Personal ($99)
- Professional ($299)
- Bootable DVD ($2)
As you can see, there’s an option for just about everyone here. Of course, the free option does have a lot of features missing, but the personal and professional options are definitely the right choice for businesses.
Let’s take a look at what options are included, and the features you’ll get with this great data recovery software.
Data Rescue PC Features
First, I want to point out that all of the versions available, minus the bootable DVD, are able to be downloaded electronically.
With the professional version, you’ll also receive the bootable DVD, which is definitely a nice addition if you need software for an external hard drive recovery.
With all versions, you’ll receive the following:
- Compatibility with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and Server.
The paid versions do provide phone support, while the free version does not.
I also want to note that the following features are available for all versions:
- FAT & NTFS recovery
- Drive failure detection
This is all that’s included with the free version of the software. While this is a definite plus for anyone who has deleted a file, I found that I needed a more robust feature set to safeguard my business.
The personal version also includes:
- Raw data cloning
- Recovery from internal and external hard drives
- Recover data that is inaccessible, deleted or formatted
This is a very powerful solution because if your drivers crash, you can use this software to recover it through a USB drive or another HDD.
The professional version is what I chose for my business. This version includes two very important features:
- Free upgrades for a year
- The Data Rescue Center Partnership
The true value comes from the partnership. This is a service where you’ll send your hard drive to the company via mail, and be able to discuss your options with a professional prior to shipping.
If your hard drive platter heads break, you’ll be able to send it to these professionals to restore your drive.
The industry’s leading security and privacy measures are in place to ensure that your data never winds up in the wrong hands. This is a great choice for any business that has critical files on the hard drive. If for some reason the software will not restore your files, this partnership will give you peace of mind in knowing that your data can be restored.
And for just $299, it’s a real bargain when you need data recovery and you have nowhere else to go.
The software is intuitive, and will allow you to restore files on your own which have been:
Advanced, Data Rescue PC3 can be used in two different ways:
- If you have access to the drive, you can install the application and quickly restore your files. A scan will take place, and you’ll be presented with files that can be restored.
- An emergency boot CD can be used if your hard drive has crashed and you do not have access to it.
Data Rescue is an award-winning company that is known for having the industry’s best data recovery software. You can clone hard drives, recover files that have been deleted, recover entire drives, and even restore files that have been corrupted due to viruses or operating system failures. All of this is provided to you with email and phone support, depending on the version you choose to purchase.
Data recovery doesn’t get easier than Data Rescue PC3 software. Within just a half an hour, I was able to restore my project’s files and save my company thousands of dollars in the process.
